An online resource for designing a better world.

Second Issue of DSI’s The Understatement

August 28, 2017

The Understatement — an online journal from the MFA Design for Social Innovation (DSI) program at SVA — presents provocative, topical thoughts on the state and practice of social design and the art of measuring its impact. The second issue of The Understatement includes essays on the definition and history of the field of design for social innovation (citing its role today as a direct creator and facilitator of healthier human behavior, producing items that improve our interactions, awareness, creativity, resourcefulness, and empathy, as well as drive us away from materialism), the role of words in design through a conversation with IBM Design Language Head, Hayley Hughes, a discussion of our relationship with food and the repurposing of food waste with Salvage Supperclub founder and DSI grad Josh Treuhaft, and an essay by Jeffrey Hollender on the misnomer of capitalism’s “free market.” Click here to read more from The Understatement.
