The Center for Public Interest Design is a research + action center at Portland State University that aims to investigate, promote, and engage in inclusive design practices that address the needs of underserved communities worldwide through work that is socially conscious, environmentally sustainable, and economically accessible to all. Certificate: The CPID & Portland State offer a Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design, designed as a means to prepare future leaders in architecture, urban planning, sustainability, community development and other fields to aid currently underserved populations through sustainable, human-centered design methods. The Certificate provides an educational foundation for entry into the emerging field of Public Interest Design, through academic studies and hands-on experience in the field, working directly with communities in need, addressing issues such as inadequate shelter, food and water scarcity, disaster preparedness and recovery, and economic well-being.

Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise

The Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise were established in 2009 as a complement to the Vilcek Prizes, to encourage and support young immigrants who have already demonstrated exceptional achievements and who often face significant challenges early in their careers. As with the Vilcek Prizes, the Creative Promise Prizes are awarded annually in biomedical science and in a changing category of the arts, this year recognizing accomplishments in the field of design.
